World Government, or Smaller Countries?

In this article for Liberty Unbound, I argue that the future is unlikely to belong to world government. It is more likely to belong to smaller countries.

Large states and centralized governments are becoming increasingly brittle as the world becomes more complex. The dream of world government misunderstands how governments actually work, how power corrupts, and how competition among jurisdictions gives individuals some protection. Smaller countries, particularly places such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Panama, and Costa Rica, often have stronger incentives to respect capital, property, and productive people.
