In this essay for Liberty Unbound, I examine India’s 2014 election, the rise of Narendra Modi, and the misplaced hope that a strong leader can transform India.
My argument is that India’s problems are much deeper than electoral politics. Corruption, irrationality, entitlement, weak work ethic, and the failure to understand causality cannot be fixed by one politician or by top-down government action. A society becomes prosperous through rational, free-thinking individuals with character, not through the worship of leaders.
