Guarded Optimism

I was published in the November 2009 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “Guarded Optimism.”

In the piece, I discuss returning to India and feeling unusually optimistic about the country—not because of its government, politics, or leadership, but because of the cultural changes being created by technology, telephony, the internet, media, and greater exposure to the outside world.

I also write about corruption, violence, superstition, social disorder, and the deeper problems India continued to face. But I saw signs that younger Indians, especially in the middle class, were beginning to behave differently from earlier generations.

The piece appeared in the Reflections section on pages 16-17 of the November 2009 print issue.
