I was published in the August 2009 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “Overcaste.”
In the piece, I discuss India’s 2009 general election, Sonia Gandhi’s Congress Party, the defeat of communists, Hindu fundamentalists, and caste-based politicians, and the possibility that Indian voters had chosen stability over political fragmentation.
I also warn against excessive optimism. Criminality in parliament, dynastic politics, Manmohan Singh’s weakness, and the grooming of Rahul Gandhi all suggested that India’s deeper political problems remained unresolved.
The piece appeared in the Reflections section on page 10 of the August 2009 print issue.
