I was published in the May 2006 issue of Liberty Magazine with an article titled “The Real India, Behind the Fog.”
India’s image in the West has shifted dramatically—from a country of snake charmers and desperate poverty to an emerging economic superpower. In this article, I look behind the impressive headline growth figures and examine what they mean for the average Indian.
India is progressing, but its gains remain highly uneven. Much of its success has come from industries such as software and telecommunications, where entrepreneurs have been able to bypass the state. Persistent poverty, bureaucratic obstruction, weak manufacturing, corruption, and collectivist ambitions continue to prevent most Indians from realizing their potential.
The article appears on pages 17–21 and concludes on page 38 of the print issue.
