I wrote an article titled “Is Delhi a Police State?” for The Statesman, published on 15 December 2000.
In this article, I describe the routine harassment and intimidation that ordinary people face at the hands of the Delhi Police. Through incidents involving passport verification, accident reporting, neighborhood disorder, arbitrary vehicle stops, and threatening behavior, I examine how authority meant to protect the public can instead become a source of fear.
