Hong Kong: Never the Same Again

In this essay, I examine Hong Kong’s protests, China’s relationship with Hong Kong, Xi Jinping’s political miscalculations, and why the city is unlikely to return to what it once was. Hong Kong’s crisis is not merely about an extradition law. It reflects the deeper tension between a free, commercially sophisticated society and a rising China that cannot easily tolerate political defiance on its doorstep.
