Banning Bad Luck

I was published in the March 2009 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “Banning Bad Luck.”

In the piece, I discuss superstition, fatalism, and the tendency to explain failure in terms of luck rather than culture, incentives, institutions, and personal responsibility.

The reflection looks at how societies shaped by magical thinking often avoid confronting the real causes of their problems. Instead of examining habits, values, and behavior, they search for symbolic solutions, rituals, prohibitions, and external explanations.

The piece appeared in the Reflections on page 9 of the March 2009 print issue.
