I was published by the Mises Institute with an article titled “Should Coke Be Banned in India?”
Several Indian states have recently banned Coca-Cola and Pepsi after claims that the drinks contain pesticide residues exceeding European standards. I question whether these bans protect ordinary Indians or merely punish companies that provide relatively safe, processed products in a country where water contamination is widespread.
I also examine how environmental activism can become hostile to development while ignoring far greater sources of pollution. The controversy shows how political opportunism, corporate lobbying, and fashionable anti-development sentiment can converge at the expense of consumers and the poor.
