Escaping the U.S. Financial Net

In this article for International Man, I examine how FATCA, American financial regulation, and US-controlled payment networks pose political risk even for people with little or no connection to the United States.

My argument is that diversification must go beyond bank accounts and jurisdictions. Payment systems themselves matter. Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and similar networks are ultimately exposed to US political pressure. China UnionPay offers one possible way to reduce that dependence.
