In this essay, I examine India’s Covid lockdown and the suffering it imposed on migrant workers, daily-wage laborers, and the poor. The lockdown exposed not merely administrative incompetence, but the deeper cruelty of a society in which the middle class could virtue-signal from safety while hundreds of millions were pushed toward hunger, homelessness, police brutality, and despair.
