Immigrants and Obama

I was published at Mises Canada with an article on immigrants, culture, voting patterns, and Barack Obama.

In the article, I discuss the political behavior of Indian immigrants in the United States, particularly those I knew from my engineering background in India. Many were hardworking, educated, law-abiding, and materially successful, yet their voting behavior reflected cultural instincts that were hostile to individualism, due process, self-responsibility, and limited government.

The article argues that immigrants do not arrive as blank slates. They bring with them assumptions about authority, hierarchy, tribal loyalty, the nanny state, and the role of government. These cultural memes matter, especially in a democracy, because voting patterns among minority groups can shape a country’s political direction.
