I was published in issue no. 157 of Le Québécois Libre with an article titled “Truckers on Strike in Vancouver.”
Writing during the Vancouver Container Truckers Association strike, I describe the disruption around the picket site and the costs imposed on nearby businesses. A local restaurant was losing customers because the strikers occupied its parking area, while its staff was also expected to provide water and attend to the strikers’ needs without compensation.
I question why a labor dispute should give its participants the right to shift their costs onto people with no involvement in it. Dissatisfied workers remain free to seek better employers, occupations, or places to live, but freedom does not include compelling others to subsidize their choices.
