I was published in the September 2006 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “Warped Freedom.”
I recount my experiences applying for visas at Western embassies in India—from losing the opportunity to study in the United States after being denied a student visa in 1990 to enduring long waits, humiliation, and arbitrary treatment at other consulates.
Although all states depend on coercion, they differ enormously in degree. Having experienced the Indian state’s treatment of its own citizens, I explain why becoming a Canadian citizen still represents a form of freedom—even though it is necessarily a warped one.
The reflection appears on pages 14 and 16 of the print issue.
