In this essay for Liberty Unbound, I examine Canada’s reaction to the October 2014 attacks and the emotional hysteria that follows when the state, the media, and a frightened public converge around security, uniforms, and Islamic terrorism.
My argument is that such events are used to expand the state’s power, increase surveillance, and reduce privacy. A rational response would be to question Canada’s foreign entanglements and the unintended consequences of intervention; instead, Canadians are likely to accept more control in the name of safety.
