Whence Comes This Evil?

I was published at Liberty Unbound with an article on the 2012 Delhi gang rape, the public protests that followed, and what the episode revealed about violence, apathy, due process, and Indian society.

In the article, I argue that the horror of the crime should not blind us to the deeper cultural problem. Violence in India is not an isolated pathology committed only by a few men. It exists within a much wider circle of brutality, numbness, superstition, hypocrisy, and weak moral introspection. I also question the emotional response of the protests, the demand for punishment without proper due process, and the tendency to turn a deep civilizational problem into a narrow gender issue.
