I was published in the March 2009 issue of Liberty Magazine with an article titled “India: Behind and Beneath.”
In the article, I discuss the reality beneath India’s economic growth story: corruption, bureaucracy, poverty, social hierarchy, institutional weakness, and the cultural contradictions that outsiders often miss when looking at India from the surface.
I also examine why India’s apparent progress should not be confused with big civilizational or institutional change. Behind the optimism surrounding growth, India remained burdened by older habits, weak public ethics, and a social structure that resisted genuine reform.
The article appeared on pages 39–42 of the March 2009 print issue.
