If Only It Was Ponzi

I was published in the September 2008 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “If Only It Was Ponzi.”

In the piece, I discuss British Columbia’s “climate action dividend,” under which residents received a $100 government check supposedly intended to encourage a lower-carbon lifestyle.

I argue that the scheme was not merely absurd, but revealing: the government took far more from citizens through taxes, returned a tiny portion of it, and then received moral credit for its supposed generosity. Even the act of mailing millions of checks created waste and a carbon footprint of its own.

The piece appeared in the Reflections section on page 17 of the September 2008 print issue.
