In the article, I discuss a Vancouver fireworks event where police were searching bags and confiscating alcohol from people in public. What struck me was not merely the regulation itself, but the public’s easy submission to petty humiliation and arbitrary enforcement.
I use the episode to reflect on how liberty is often lost slowly, almost imperceptibly. A society does not become authoritarian all at once. It gives up an inch at a time, usually while laughing off each small abuse as harmless.
