Benazir: A Corrupt Legacy

I was published in the April 2008 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “Benazir: A Corrupt Legacy.”

In the piece, I examine the heroic image constructed around Benazir Bhutto and question whether her political career justified the admiration she received after her assassination.

I discuss dynastic politics, corruption allegations, her failure to improve the position of Pakistan’s women and minorities, and the Western tendency to treat democracy and prominent political personalities as solutions to problems rooted much more deeply in a society’s culture and institutions.

The reflection appeared on pages 8–9 of the April 2008 print issue.
