I was published by the Mises Institute with an article titled “Lands of Catastrophe: The Case of India and Pakistan.”
Writing after the October 2005 earthquake in Kashmir, I argue that the immense loss of life cannot be attributed to nature alone. State intervention, misguided environmentalism, corrupt construction practices, and bureaucratic incompetence had made communities far more vulnerable to disaster.
I also examine the failure of India and Pakistan to provide effective relief despite maintaining an enormous military presence in Kashmir. The catastrophe reveals how collectivism, territorial nationalism, and dysfunctional institutions repeatedly sacrifice human lives while preserving the power of the state.
