More Government, More Corruption!

I was published in issue no. 155 of Le Québécois Libre with an article titled “More Government, More Corruption!”

I begin with the experience of an importer whose goods, worth $150,000, arrived at New Delhi International Airport in 1996. The ordeal illustrates how customs controls, bureaucratic discretion, and deliberate delays can turn ordinary commercial activity into an opportunity for extortion.

I argue that corruption cannot be cured by giving the state still more powers. Every additional license, restriction, tax, and approval creates another point at which an official can obstruct an honest entrepreneur and demand payment. More government does not remove corruption—it expands the machinery through which corruption operates.
