Democracy: Nothing Good in it

My article, No Cheers for Democracy, was originally published at International Man.

In this essay, I examine democracy not as a sacred political principle, but as a system of incentives that often worsens the very societies it claims to improve. In the Third World in particular, democracy tends to empower tribalism, envy, magical thinking, short-termism, and mass sentiment, destroying the fragile institutional structures on which civilization depends.
