The Council of Canadians Examined

I was published in issue no. 152 of Le Québécois Libre with an article titled “A Look Into the Moral Underpinning of the Council of Canadians.”

After examining the Council of Canadians’ publications and attending one of its meetings, I question the evidence and moral assumptions behind its campaigns against free trade, corporations, private health care, and economic globalization.

I argue that organizations presenting themselves as the voice of “civil society” can exercise political pressure without electoral accountability. Their proposals often protect established interests in wealthy countries while denying workers and entrepreneurs in poorer countries access to trade, investment, employment, and economic opportunity.
