I was published in the January–February 2009 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “Moon Before Hunger.”

In the piece, I question the Indian government’s decision to launch a mission to the moon while much of the country remains deprived of basic necessities.

I contrast India’s technological ambitions with double-digit inflation, unemployment, malnutrition, poverty, a worsening sex imbalance, and the widespread absence of clean water, sanitation, electricity, healthcare, and adequate education. Whatever national pride the moon mission may generate, I ask whether it can be justified while these more immediate human needs remain unmet.
