Musings on Investing

The Civilizing Process

Why do education, prosperity, democracy, Western institutions, Christianity, and similar concepts have perverse effects when applied in the Third World? It is because the Third World is not grounded in a search for truth. Here is a discussion with Gabriel Custodiet:

Alas, this hasn’t stopped the West from bringing in people who will never assimilate and will grow up to hate the West. Worse yet, the demographics of the world are shifting rapidly. The West will soon have a non-European majority, and the Third World, where two-thirds of humanity lives, cannot sustain itself without Pax Americana, which is rapidly coming to an end. This leaves East Asian countries like Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China as the remaining islands of peace and stability.

On Investments

Recently, Michael McCrae and I discussed China and why gold is set to take on increasing prominence:

Apart from the two companies I mentioned towards the end of the above video, there are two investment opportunities I’m currently paying attention to:

  • Base Resources (ASX.BSE; A$0.22) is merging with Energy Fuels (EFR; $6.35). There is a 12% arbitrage upside in owning BSE, and the merger is expected to conclude in early October 2024. An October 2024 Call Option for EFR can be sold for what is equivalent to 10% of EFR’s value. Unless EFR’s price falls, a total of ~20% profit can be made in owning BSE. If you sell a deep-in-the-money Call Option, you can be reasonably sure of securing a profit. However, there is a risk if the deal does not go through. (Thanks to my friend, Jason Nutter, for help with this).
  • A rights offering for Maritime Resources (MAE.RT; $0.005) is underway. You can exercise each right for $0.034. The best way to make money from this is to buy an insignificant number of rights (say, 1,000 for a small sum of $5) and request a significantly high oversubscription. Whatever I obtain through oversubscription will have a cost base of $0.034. With MAE trading at $0.04, this represents an 18% profit.
