The Empire Strikes Back
When the British arrived in India, they wanted to define the social structure they saw. Being systems thinkers, they classified the caste system. That was a mistake and created confusion among everyone. How could you organize something that had no structure? With Gabriel Custodiet, I talked about this, the slavery I have seen, the fact that most of the rape cases filed with the Indian police are fake and that the raped women, if they go to the police, risk getting raped again and even disappeared.
On Investments
In the past, I provided my favorite coal companies. Most of them have done reasonably well and have offered as much as 20% or more in dividends and share buybacks. The following continue to provide good value, in descending order of my preference:
- Yancoal Australia (ASX.YAL; A$4.57)
- Whitehaven Coal (ASX.WHC; A$6.54)
- Stanmore Resources (ASX.SMR; A$3.66)
- New Hope (ASX.NHC; A$5.15)
I have recently started to follow a solar company, Canadian Solar (NYSE.CSIQ; US$20.80). It offers a fabulous upside. P/E is ~2.1. It also owns shares in its majority-owned China-listed subsidiary, worth about three times CSIQ’s market capitalization.
