Two Totalitarianisms

I was published in the November 2007 issue of Liberty Magazine with a reflection titled “Two Totalitarianisms.”

I contrast two forms of state predation: the open brutality and raw exploitation found in India, and the softer Western variety concealed behind foreign aid, academic credentials, humanitarian language, and bureaucratic benevolence.

One makes its coercion unmistakable; the other disguises waste and exploitation as social progress. In both cases, those involved often persuade themselves that they are serving society.

The reflection appears on pages 9–10 of the print issue.
