India: Great Expectations

In this article for Liberty Unbound, I examine the misplaced optimism about India’s economic future.

I discuss why India’s post-1991 liberalization produced some visible improvements, but failed to change the deeper cultural, institutional, and moral problems that keep the country stagnant. India’s problem is not merely too much government, but a society in which corruption, fatalism, weak respect for property, and the absence of reason and individualism make genuine liberty and prosperity difficult to sustain.
